HVAC professionals want consumers to know that saving energy is not just about turning the thermostat up or down. There are many ways to more efficiently heat and cool your home.

HVAC specialists say that so many people do not tap into the potential of ceiling fans or other fans. They seem to treat them like lights, turning them off when not in the room. Those fans, however, are a key to maintaining a temperature in the entire house. The stream of air keeps you cooler, resulting in less fiddling with the thermostat, and they keep temperatures steady. Every family has at least one family member who likes to be cold, cold, cold at night, and a personal fan is probably a better choice than turning the thermostat down.

Speaking of thermostats, programmable devices can really save energy, HVAC experts say. Sure, keeping the setting steady is a better alternative than manually moving it up and down all the time, but a programmable device allows you to cool or heat when needed and save energy when cooling and heating is not needed. For a family who leaves a home vacant all day long, a thermostat can be set for high or low depending on the season and then set to stabilize a comfortable temperature as the family begins to arrive home. Sleep experts also say that dropping the temperature a few degrees at night signals the body to calm down and relax making it easier to drift into slumber. This is a great secret for those with little sleepers in the family. It is also really nice to be able to wake up to warmth to crawl out of bed in the morning, and a programmable thermostat can do that, too.

Many do not realize how much energy is lost through windows. It seems a little misguided to spend a small fortune replacing windows to save a bit on energy costs each month, but you have to think of it as a lifetime investment. HVAC and window installation experts say that costs can be recouped after one year of installing new windows on your energy bill alone, but you can also get on board with rebate programs and tax credits for installing energy star products.

HVAC experts also suggest using the sun to your benefit. Close the curtains and blinds at night to help maintain the comfortable temperatures, and open them in the day and benefit from the heat of the sun. And, for goodness sake, don’t pay to cool or heat your home if the outside temperature is comfortable. Open the window and doors and enjoy the free fresh air.
